How it works

  1. 01Paste Markdown into the box, or drop a .md, .markdown or .txt file onto the box above.
  2. 02markdown-it parses it with CommonMark rules, plus the table, strikethrough and task-list extensions. The result goes through DOMPurify before it reaches you.
  3. 03Pick fragment or full page, toggle indentation, then copy the HTML or download it as a file.

What's supported

  • All of CommonMark: ATX and setext headings, nested lists, reference links, fenced and indented code
  • GFM pipe tables, rendered as <table><thead><th scope="col">
  • Task lists, rendered as disabled checkboxes with a .task-list-item class to style
  • Strikethrough, and bare URLs auto-linked with an option to stop it
  • Raw HTML blocks and inline HTML, sanitised on the way through
  • Soft line breaks kept as <br>, or allowed to flow, whichever you pick

What it won't do

  • No syntax highlighting — the language class is emitted, the colours are yours
  • Footnotes, definition lists, abbreviations and container directives aren't parsed
  • YAML front matter isn't stripped or read; delete it first if you don't want it in the output
  • Math notation ($...$ or \[...\]) passes through as literal text
  • Files over 25 MB

Questions people ask

Yes, and they come out as proper markup: a <thead> with <th scope="col"> cells, a <tbody> for the rest, and alignment carried across as inline text-align. Screen readers can read the result as a table, which they can't do with a grid faked out of divs.

DocsToMD is this same tool pointed in reverse — Word, PDF, Excel and HTML into Markdown. Same approach, same privacy model, opposite output.
